What Was the Golf Channel Thinking with This "I Have a Dream" Tweet?

Bad timing.

None

You don't get a mulligan for mistakes like this.

For reasons that escape reasonable people, someone sent out a tweet from the Golf Channel's Twitter account asking followers to tweet their "golf dreams" on the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, complete with the hashtag you see above. Let the palming of faces commence.

Here's a quick lesson in ethics and common sense: The anniversary of the defining speech of a period that helped change the world and shape the remainder of the 20th century—one that might be the most famous speech of the century—is not the appropriate time to exploit social media for marketing purposes. It's not a branding opportunity.

The tweet has been deleted, but the damage has been done. Think before you tweet. Always think before you tweet.
