Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be on the other side of the register your favorite fast food restaurant? Fast food workers have walked out on their jobs as they fight to have the living wage increased to $15 per hour. According to the National Employment Law Project, the current median hourly wage is $8.94, which is barely enough to make ends meet in most U.S. cities.
Mother Jones posted a fast food wage calculator, which determines how many hours you'd have to work per week to make a certain amount of money. Let's say you're an adult with no children residing in New York; you'd have to work a staggering 64 hours per week just to make $30,000. In New York, that's the equivalent of the change in your sofa.
Furthermore, the calculator adds that a household with these characteristics would have to make just under $24,000 in New York to live somewhat comfortably. For that to happen, fast food workers would have to earn $11.47 per hour—nearly $2.50 above the current median living wage.
