D.C. Wants to Host 2024 Summer Olympics

D.C. or nothin'.

None

D.C. will enter the competition for the 2024 Olympic Summer Games, says the Associated Press. A nonprofit group by the name of DC 2024 has been created to formally enter the bid. President Bob Sweeney called the nation's capital "the safest and most secure city in the world," adding that "the largest expense of any Olympic Games is security, and the fact that we've got it pretty built in to our everyday life here in Washington, we would leverage that asset tremendously to put on this high-profile event."

Other U.S. cities expressing interest in hosting the 2024 Summer Games include Tulsa, Philadelphia and Los Angeles, where the 1932 and 1984 games were held. On the global front, Paris, Rome, an unnamed South African city and Doha, Qatar are all in the running. Should any of the domestic locations come out on top, it would be the first time the U.S. hosted the Summer Games since Atlanta did in 1996.
