You're better off buying a castle in Scotland than trying to live in New York City, unless you're filthy rich. The average rent in Brooklyn exceeds $3,000 per month, and the Wall Street Journal says Scottish castles are moving at discounted rates. Scotland is still hurting from the recession, so the average price of a "prime country house" has fallen from $1.856 million in 2007 to $1.127 million today.

With the average New York City apartment costing over $1.4 million, a highland home doesn't sound too bad these days. If you have the money, that is. Oh, and don't mind never, ever knowing your neighbors.
