The Last Waltz (1978)
Director: Martin Scorsese
Martin Scorsese loves rock and roll and uses it so well in his movies that he's thought of as an American master when it comes to incorporating pop music into the cinema. So, what happens when Scorsese makes a movie about rock and roll? Magic, duh.
The Last Waltz documents The Band's farewell performance on November 25, 1976, at Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. For this Thanksgiving Day show, the Canadian-American rock outfit best known for working with Bob Dylan was joined onstage by Neil Young, Emmylou Harris, Ringo Starr, Dr. John, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, and many, many more. Best concert movie ever? It's hard to argue with those names. —RS
