Around 3 a.m. this morning, two rookie NYPD officers shot and killed an armed teenager in the South Bronx. The officers, ages 26 and 27, were assigned to patrol the area as part of the Operation Impact initiative, when they reportedly saw 14-year-old Shaaliver Douse opening fire on a man while chasing after him. After identifying themselves as police officers, they ordered Douse to drop his weapon. When Douse refused, one of the officers fired once, striking Douse in the jaw.
Douse was pronounced dead at the scene and police recovered an Astra A 100 9mm semi-automatic handgun.
The New York Post reports that Douse was arrested in May for shooting a 15-year-old. He was initially charged with attempted murder, but that was dropped and he was due to appear in court to face weapons possessions charges on Aug. 23.
The two officers, who graduated from the police academy last month, were taken to Jacobi Hospital to be treated for tinnitus.
