Just days after Tumblr CEO David Karp appeared on The Colbert Report, where he stated that Tumblr wouldn't be doing anything to censor the rampant adult content on its blogs, Tumblr has updated its guidelines today to finally do something about it. Well, kind of. Tumblr is essentially organizing its adult content from now on.
"Tumblr welcomes free expression, but we have to be sensitive to the millions of readers and bloggers from different locations, cultures, and backgrounds with different points of view concerning mature/adult-oriented NSFW content," said the Tumblr team in a post on their very much PG blog today. "There are a lot of people in our community who would rather not see adult-oriented stuff and could even get in trouble if they did!"
So, if you're one of the thousands of people who post content that contains nudity, listen up. Tumblr now wants you to choose a classification for your blog: you can either choose "NSFW" or "Adult." NSFW blogs are designated for blogs that have some nudity or mature content from time to time (think of it as an occasional nip-slip, or the like), while Adult blogs have substantial nudity or adult content. Also, these NSFW or Adult blogs won't appear in search engines, so they'll be a little harder to find.
