Last summer, Bada$$'s debut tape 1999 earned a flood of critical praise for its throwback sensibilities and the tongue-twisting, technical prowess it displayed from an artist not yet even old enough to smoke a cigarette. With Summer Knights, Bada$$ shows no signs of slowing down, and it's clear that he's made serious efforts to expand upon his creative talents and visions. There's a rougher edge on this album, signalled by hardier, raspier vocals that almost sound like Joey is swallowing gravel when he rhymes. Or maybe that's just puberty kicking in? It's hard for many of us to imagine what it would be like to find ourselves on Death Row, and even harder to envision what our last words would be if we were forced to come to terms with the consequences of that situation. Recently, the New York Times put together a series of excerpts to show exactly what goes through the mind of the convicts during their last living moments, and the collection is spellbinding to say the least. Religion, family, and innocence are the common threads throughout these quotes, but perhaps the most poignant words come from Napoleon Beazley who said, "A lot of [criminals] want to fix the mess they started, but don't know how. The problem is not in that people aren't willing to help them find out, but in the system telling them it won't matter anyway. No one wins tonight. No one gets closure. No one walks away victorious." ICYMI (wait, LOL, you couldn't have, because that's impossible), this big name rapper from Brooklyn released an album on Independence Day. Basically if you've watched any video on YouTube these past couple weeks, then you've probably heard something about it because his label's newest sponsor, Samsung, has been advertising it LITERALLY EVERYWHERE ON THE INTERNET. But, thankfully, the media blitz has finally come to a close, and the album is now available to download for your listening pleasure. Wait...what'd you say? I can only get this if I have a Samsung phone? What the f---are you serious?? Uhhh...hm. Okay, look we aren't going to say that you shouldn't wait until July 7 for the album to drop for all of us unwashed, Samsung-less heathens, but at the same time, we're not not going to say it. I mean, do you really want to be that guy who isn't blasting the album during your holiday weekend barbecue? The choice is yours; we aren't judging. As far as we're concerned, this conversation never happened.
