It all began with a dare.

San Diego school officials say that several students at Audubon Elementary School were hospitalized after drinking a combination of milk, hot sauce, salt and carrots. According to spokesman Jack Brandais, the children dared each other to drink the science experiment on Thursday, and afterwards students reported feelings of nausea and upset stomachs.

When teachers asked if other students were experiencing the same, Brandais says some who were totally healthy tried to take advantage of the opportunity. Eighteen of the 22 students who reported sickness were hospitalized and ultimately released, and the school sanitized the kitchen, cafeteria and outdoor lunch area just to be safe.
