We never thought we'd see the day that Philip Seymour Hoffman made a return to television, but, behold: The Oscar-winning actor has just signed on to the new Showtime series Trending Down, alongside actress Kathryn Hahn.
Hoffman appeared in a TV show twice in his career: His first role ever was a guest appearance in a 1991 episode of Law & Order, and in 2009, he voiced a character on the kids show Arthur. Other than that, Hoffman's stuck to film, and has received numerous Academy award nominations and one win (for his role in 2005's Capote) as a result.
As for Trending Down—according to Vulture, it's actually based on the books Hope: A Tragedy, and Foreskin's Lament: A Memoir, both by Shalom Auslander. Hoffman will play a "a man facing his own obsolescence after his advertising agency is taken over," and the show promises to be "a blistering attack on our youth-obsessed culture, and a darkly comic examination of what it means to matter. Or matter not." It's too early in the morning to be this existential. In addition to starring, Hoffman is set to executive produce the show.
