World famous hacker Barnaby Jack died in San Francisco on Thursday, and no details have been released about the circumstances of his death.
Jack was scheduled to make an appearance at the Black Hat hacking convention in Las Vegas next week, where he claimed he'd show how to compromise a pacemaker and kill someone implanted with one from just 30 feet away. "I will discuss how these devices operate and communicate and the security shortcomings of the current protocols, Jack said. "Our internal research software will be revealed that utilizes a common bedside transmitter to scan for, and interrogate individual medical implants."
He was a security expert, and used his skills to showcase vulnerabilities in everyday machines. In 2010, he led a demonstation that forced ATMs to spit out cash, which he billed as "Jackspotting."
Dave Marcus, a senior threat researcher at McAfee, tweeted:
Great memory: Barnaby Jack shooting me in the face with water through a hacked insulin pump whilst doing shots. RIP Barns. You made me laugh
