The ongoing Applied Design exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York is further expanding its video game collection with none other than Minecraft. So next time someone tells you stop playing video games, explain that you're just doing a bit of art history.
Minecraft and six other games, including Pong, Space Invaders, and Asteroids, will join other classics on what's become the video gaming wall of fame. MoMA's permanent collection also includes Pac-Man, Tetris, Portal and many others that "emphasize not only the visual quality and aesthetic experience of each game, but also the many other aspects—from the elegance of the code to the design of the player’s behavior—that pertain to interaction design." Says Paola Antonelli, the Architecture and Design senior curator.
So not only has Minecraft become a pervasive cultural reference, an 11 Million unit seller on PC (not to mention over 7 million more just on Xbox 360) is now available on virtually ever device that has an on button, it's Art.
We bet art history classes are going to be way more fun in the future.
