More bad news for "Kai the Hatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker." He's already been acussed of beating a lawyer to death, now Union County Jail officials claim he tried to commit suicide yesterday. Kai, or Caleb McGillivary, was arrested in May after 73-year-old Joseph Galfy's body was discovered inside of his Clark, N.J. home. After two days as a fugitive, McGillivary was arrested in Philadelphia and charged with murder.
McGillivary, 24, encountered Clark during a chance meeting in Times Square. In a Facebook post dated May 14, McGillivary wrote about waking up in a stranger's home after being drugged and sexually assaulted. Union County prosecutor Theodore Romankow doesn't buy McGillivary's claims, calling them "self-serving."
In a statement, Union County spokesman Sebastian D'Elia said that McGillivary was taken to an area hospital yesterday morning with self-inflicted wounds. Though officials were barred from providing details about his injuries, D'Elia said they were not life-threatening.
At his arraignment last month, McGillivary pleaded not guilty. He's currently being held on $3 million bail.
