James Cameron created a monster, and he knows it. The Avatar director put 3D back on the map when he delivered the visually spectacular space epic - and more importantly, when it shattered box office records. Since then, everything from superhero blockbusters to The Great Gatsby has been either filmed or converted to the format, and Jim doesn't like what he's seeing.

Speaking at the TagDF technology forum in Mexico City, with fellow visionary auteur Alfonso Cuaron, Cameron took a shot at the recent studio trend of converting blockbusters to 3D: "After Avatar changed everything, good and bad movies, everything has to be in 3D. The problem I see now is that instead of it being a filmmaker issue, it's a matter of the studios [trying] to make money and pushing 3D to directors who are not comfortable or do not like 3D."

He went on to cite this summer's Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel as prime examples of visual overkill: "If you spend $150 million on visual effects, the film is already going to [look] spectacular [and] perfect.” We couldn't agree more, and not because we hate those damn uncomfortable glasses. But unfortunately the trend doesn't show signs of stopping anytime soon.

An aside for those who found Avatar's actual story bland and lacking: Cameron also states that he's less focused on boundary pushing technology and more on expanding story and characters for the sequel. So there's that. Watch the video here:
