Former New York governor and attorney general Eliot Spitzer has announced plans to run for city comptroller. Spitzer, also known as Client No. 9, resigned from his position five years ago amidst an international prostitution ring scandal that made hooker of choice Ashley Dupre a momentary star.
During a telephone interview with the New York Times, the 54-year-old Spitzer said he talked things over with his family and believes New York residents are ready to forgive and forget. “I’m hopeful there will be forgiveness, I am asking for it,” he told the Times.
Since his departure from office, Spitzer worked as an analyst for the likes of Current TV, NY1 and CNN. A politician at heart, he couldn't stay away from the thrill of being a public figure. "I love public service. I believe in it and hope I will be given a second chance," he told the New York Daily News.
Spitzer will need to secure 3,750 signatures for his petition by Thursday to go head-to-head with Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer.
