Electronic Arts is working on plans to adapt its sci-fi horror videogame Dead Space into a film franchise.

Variety reports that Philip Gelatt, writer of Europa Report, has written a script for Dead Space that will be adapted and developed by Justin Marks, screenwriter for Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.

Marks, speaking at San Diego Comic-Con today, says he understands sticking to the authenticity of the original character but that the story might get some changes. “You would be making Event Horizon or Alien. I’ve already seen that movie.”

This is part of a flood of recent videogame movie development including Ubisoft’s in-house adaptations to Assassin’s Creed, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell and Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon with the help of New Regency, Fox, and Warner Bros. Electronic Arts and Dreamworks just wrapped production on a Need for Speed film.

Until we get a big-budget Dead Space we’re just going to need to tide ourselves over with fan films.
