Since Wednesday evening, Chicago has been racked by gun violence and the Chicago Tribune reports that eight people have been killed and another 30 injured. Not only is this one of the city's most violent periods of the year, it just about matches numbers from the 4th of July last year where five people were killed and 37 wounded.
Shootings left two boys injured in separate incidents in city parks. A 7-year-old was shot in the head at Cole Park around 7:25 p.m. yesterday and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition. The boy's family says he is expected to survive.
A 5-year-old boy shot just after midnight in Cooper Park has been identified as Jaden Donald. According to his mother, Jasmine Donald, the family was in the park a mere 15 minutes before shooting started. While checking on her son, she noticed blood pouring from a huge wound and he was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center as well. He underwent surgery and is breathing with the help of a ventilator.
Across Chicago, a 14-year-old was among four wounded by a shooting in West Woodlawn; a 17-year-old was shot in the stomach; a 21-year-old was shot in the buttocks, then fled the hospital after refusing to cooperate with police and a 28-year-old man drove himself to St. Bernard Hospital and Healthcare Center after sustaining gunshot wounds to his chest and abdomen. He was later transported to Stroger Hospital and is reportedly in critical condition.
