If Jumaane Williams gets his way, Brooklyn residents will have to notify local cops and city council members prior to throwing gatherings with more than 40 people. The City Council representative is proposing legislation that would force party hosts to inform officials three days before the party's date. Williams' plan was motivated by the June shooting in East Flatbush that left nine people injured.
Williams has proposed another plan that would fine homeowners who run what he describes as "house clubs," which they advertise in advance, charge a cover for entry and sell drinks. This was announced at a press conference, where Williams said these parties are just problems waiting to happen. "We think when there's 200, 300 people in a backyard, and this happens on a routine basis, you're really inviting trouble," he said.
According to Williams, nothing about this plan is final and it isn't like people would have to ask mommy and daddy for the green light: “All we said is we have to inform the precinct and inform the community aboard. You wouldn’t have to ask for approval. You wouldn’t have to ask for permission,” he added.
While NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly offered no comment on Williams' plan, he did note that police monitor huge parties and take action when necessary.
