Session 9 (2001)
Director: Brad Anderson
Stars: David Caruso, Stephen Gevedon, Paul Guilfoyle
It takes a special kind of horror movie to scare us each and every time we revisit it; amongst the small pool of such films, Stanley Kubrick's The Shining immediately comes to mind. Although it's not as masterful as Kubrick's Stephen King adaptation, indie filmmaker Brad Anderson's creepy Session 9 is another example of a genre piece that holds up on repeat viewings. Credit the film's authentic location, the Danvers State Hospital (in Danvers, Massachusetts), a massive, decrepit building with a gruesome history. Anderson subjects his characters-five asbestos removers tasked with renovating the asylum-to all kinds of psychological and supernatural torment; watching Session 9 on your precious couch, you'll feel just as unsettled.
