It's February, 1971, and a message crackles over the police radio—Frank Serpico has been shot. The undercover cop who bucked corruption in the NYPD's bleeding from a close-range gunshot to the face.
Sidney Lumet's masterful crime picture opens with Serpico's dying body racing through the night, and then moves backward in time to tell the story of the unorthodox but honest cop. Played by Al Pacino, Serpico is a liminal figure: He dresses like a hipster, and all his fellow cops think he's queer, but the hippies and beatniks aren't gonna hang out with a pig. He's a lonely but exuberant figure caught in a world that has no place for him.
