The final words of Casablanca are as quotable as any in cinema history: "I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship," says hero Rick (Humphrey Bogart), owner of the bar the film revolves around, to Louis (Claude Rains), the corrupt captain of police in Casablanca. It's a sarcastic quip, like so many of Rick's lines. But can you blame the guy? He's nursing a broken heart, having been left by his girlfriend for the second time. This time he let her go. Of course, it was the right thing to do, as her new man is doing important work in the effort against the Nazis.
It's a monumental (and bittersweet) decision he's made. And so Rick and Louis walk off together, two ultimately good men who have seen too much, sharing a laugh. Great stuff. —GT
