37. Before Sunset (2004)
Director: Richard Linklater
Screenwriter: Richard Linklater, Ethan Hawke, and Julie Delpy
The very well executed sequel to the cult romantic classic, Before Sunrise, sets out to answer the burning questions of its faithful followers: What have Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) been doing for the past nine years? The movie, which periodically lays out some really big answers to those questions, ultimately brings the two lovers to another heart-wrenching crossroads.
Jesse's about to miss his plane. Celine dances playfully in front of him, and the movie's magic is summarized in one line: "Baby, you are gonna miss your flight." But then—and Christopher Nolan definitely stole this for Inception—we don't see his response! Audiences are left to wonder, yet again, what happened? And when will we know? Thankfully, we got an answer this year. —GT
