2013 is shaping up to be a significant year for the e-reader business. According to reports, Amazon is getting ready to redesign its Kindle Fire lineup by adding three new tablets for the holiday season. On the other side of the aisle, Barnes & Noble has just lost its CEO, sparking speculation that this could spell a true 'beginning of the end' scenario for the bookseller.

Amazon's new lineup will feature a replacement for the 7-inch Kindle Fire. It will get an improved display of 1280 x 800 pixels, the same as the Kindle Fire HD; the Kindle Fire HD will be upgraded to a 1,920 x 1,200 screen—a big bump up from its current 1,280 x 800 pixel display. The third upgrade will be for the Kindle Fire HD 8.9'', which will get upgraded from 1,920 x 1,200 pixels to 2,560 x 1,600. The new HD bodies will reportedly be lighter and have flat slopes out to its edges instead of curved slopes. Power and volume buttons are now placed in this sloping area, to prevent accidental touching. These new editions should be out sometime this fall.

Amazon's other rival, Barnes & Noble, lost its CEO William Lynch yesterday when he resigned after taking the helm in 2010. As the iPad and Kindle Fire gained more market share, B&N's Nook lost money for the company.

Talk about a tale of two cities.
