What do you do when you earn $15 million from Silicon Valley investors? Easy: you expand.
That's exactly what Rap Genius did today when they officially launched Poetry Genius, Rock Genius and News Genius, three new sites under the umbrella of their popular rap annotation website. Seem like a lot to handle? Well, that's exactly what the founders want—they're on a quest to annotate the internet. "The true promise of the site is to take it beyond hip-hop, beyond music, and analyze, break down, and show the context behind the text for every form of text," said co-founder Tom Lehman.
The new sites have been out for a little more than a week now, but today the company adjusted its Rap Genius homepage to showcase the new features more prominently. Each site is operated similarly to Rap Genius, relying on Wikipedia-style, user-generated content. Users submit annotated works, and volunteer editors check them out. Moby Dick, and Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream Speech," are some of the works that have already been annotated.
