Ouya, the Kickstarter funded, Android powered console, launches today in North America and the UK. And there have already been delays.
The publicly funded darling features Nvidia's Tegra 3 processor to give PC-like quality to Android-based games. The console is available at retailers like Amazon, Best Buy and Target for $99.99 while additional controllers will put you out another $49.99. But some Kickstarter backers still haven't received their consoles
Ouya founder Julie Uhrman apologized for the delays, stating, "I am pissed."
Currently Ouya features on open OS and over 170 free-to-try games like Chronoblade and Final Fantasy 3. As well as streaming services like Twitch.tv, TuneIn and Plex and the Discover store that will feature a changing roster of guest curators. Ouya will also feature a Make Channel that allows developers to build and test games.
Social features of the Ouya won't launch until later this year and a Minecraft port (the current "beast" of top grossing games) will hit later this year, so for now Ouya doesn't seem to have any 'killer-aps' besides its price point against the next-gen consoles.
With lots of games available we'll see if Ouya users can stay interested, especially as Nvidia's handheld Shield launches with a higher price but faster processor. Ouya will get additional competition from the M.O.J.O. which will also launch late 2013.
If you're one of the many still waiting for your console to arrive, breathe easy, Uhrman says to wait another two weeks while the shipping snafu is sorted out.
