What do some New York City restaurants and scared teenagers have in common? Hiding bad grades. According to a New York Daily News report, a stunning 1,356 restaurants have been fined since last year for either hiding or not displaying Department of Health inspection grades.
Apparently restaurants would rather risk fines than share their mediocre to poor grades with customers. Juniper manager Thomas Mark stands by this practice, saying "It would have ruined [his] business" if he displayed the restaurant's "C" grade. Other restaurants claim customers have stolen their grades or that they simply had not arrived in the mail. Then there are those renegades, the rebellious students of the bunch, who refuse to present grades in protest of the system itself.
Losing customers, conforming to the system or facing a $1,000 fine—pick your poison.
