The lead inspector who examined the Philadelphia building that collapsed last week and killed six people has committed suicide. According to Philadelphia police, 52-year-old Ronald Wagenhoffer was found dead in his truck last night less than a mile from his home, the victim of a self-inflicted gunshot would to the chest.
Though Wagenhoffer didn't leave a suicide note, police sources say he sent a text message to his wife prior to shooting himself. Officials say that he visited the building located at 2134 Market Street in Center City back on May 14 after safety concerns were reported. There were no violations discovered during his inspection.
Last week, the building's outer wall fell on top of the Salvation Army Thrift Store on the corner of 22nd & Market Streets. In addition to killing six, 13 people were buried alive beneath the rubble and eventually rescued by emergency responders and other citizens.
Wagenhoffer is survived by his wife and 7-year-old son.
