What if you could change the world with one question? To have artist Hank Willis Thomas and actor Jesse Williams tell it, that may soon be a reality.
Along with Chris Johnson, Bayeté Ross Smith and Kamal Sinclair, Thomas and Williams are setting out to build Question Bridge Interactive, an online platform that will use transmedia storytelling, data visualization and social media to "expose the true complexity, diversity and humanity of an identity group."
Question Bridge: Black Males began as a video art installation—it was an Official Selection of the 2012 Sundance Film Festival—and for the past year and a half the team has produced live community events across the U.S. With the website, the team hopes to expand the conversation.
"Many of the transformative moments in history have been generated by things you could formerly describe as art," says Johnson, who is the founder of the project. "And that's not accidental."
Per the group's Kickstarter page (they're hoping to raise $68,000), visitors to Question Bridge Interactive "will be able to cross-reference data in real-time, pulling from the wealth of archived content as well as on-the-fly uploads from other site visitors. The more uploads to the interactive experience, the richer the search results become. The site is built to expand with the content."
"Questionbridge.com is a space for visitors, whether they are witnesses or participants, to explore, to reflect, and/ or contribute to a growing dialogue in a reflective and reflexive way," Williams says.
