According to the first-ever probe into housing discrimination against same-sex couples by the Department of Housingand Urban Development, gay couples struggle the most when finding apartments to rent. Unfortunately, same-sex couples experience discrimination from rental agents more often than heterosexual couples, but the HUD study revealed an interesting—if not head-scratching—fact: lesbian couples are discriminated against less often than gay couples.

The examination is based on 7,000 email tests held in 50 metropolitan markets across the United States between June and October 2011. Each housing provider was sent two emails: one saying the couple was heterosexual, the other saying it was same-sex. The treatment was gauged by the response they received, and in some cases, the initial email received no response.
