Fun Fact: Penn is a vegetarian, so all of the White Castle burgers he eats in the movie are actually veggie burgers.
During its theatrical run, Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle didn't make much noise, and we can understand why. At the time, its stars-John Cho and Kal Penn-were nobodies, not to mention that its title isn't exactly very most hooky. Over time, though, this unexpectedly intelligent and front-to-back hilarious comedy-adventure has amassed the fandom it so rightfully deserves.
Even though Cho and Penn wonderfully play the title characters as regular Joes and not racial stereotypes, the film doesn't ignore the elephant in the room; i.e., its heroes are from ethnic backgrounds that are usually forced into sidekick roles in Hollywood productions. Thus, the racial humor is present, very funny, and particularly clever.
