Yesterday, the city of Philadelphia was rocked after the Salvation Army thrift store on the corner of 22nd & Market Street collapsed. The incident occurred around 10:45 a.m. yesterday morning when the four-story building next door—which was under demolition—came down on top of it.
About 13 hours after the collapse, firefighters found 61-year-old Myra Plekam alive amidst the rubble. Plekam became the 14th survivor; sadly, six others lost their lives. Those who were rescued were rushed to the hospital, including Plekam, who city Public Safety Director Michael Resnick says was talking with her rescuers as they pulled her from the wreckage.
Market Street was closed between 18th and 30th Street for the majority of the day, but as of this morning, only streets close to the scene are blocked off.
