Sandra Bullock originally turned down the role.

Though Sandra Bullock was in talks to portray the character of Miss Hannigan in the upcoming Will Smith/Jay-Z-produced adaptation of Annie, Deadline is reporting that Cameron Diaz has officially signed on for the role. Apparently, Bullock actually was attached to the part, but was forced to drop out for unspecified reasons.

If you don't recall from any musical production of Annie or from the 1982 feature adaptation of it—in which case, what was your childhood, even—Miss Hannigan was the perpetually drunk and cruel supervisor of the orphanage that Annie lives in for most of her young life before she's adopted by Daddy Warbucks.

Also signed on to the project are Beasts of the Wild star Quvenzhané Wallis as Annie, and Jamie Foxx as the Daddy Warbucks-inspired character Benjamin Stacks. Smith, his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith, and Jay-Z are attached to produce, and Friends With Benefits director Will Gluck will be directing. A holiday 2014 release date is anticipated.
