Do we really need Mission Impossible 5? No, probably not, but Hollywood isn't built on stifling frivolity. According to Deadline, Tom Cruise has officially signed on to portray Ethan Hunt in a fifth film for the franchise, with J.J. Abrams and his production company, Bad Robot, set to produce. A writer/director has yet to be hired, but rumor has it that Jack Reacher director Christopher McQuarrie will sign on to the project.

This news actually isn't completely surprising when you think about it: The last Mission Impossible film, Ghost Protocol, had a budget of $145 million, and it went on to earn a whopping $700 million in the box office worldwide - the most for any Cruise-starring pic.

Mission Impossible 5 is tentatively slated for 2015.
