If you thought twerking jumped the shark after the Miley Cyrus video, you haven't seen shit.
Thirty-three student from Scripps Ranch High School in San Diego were suspended for their participation in a twerk video that was filmed using school equipment. The students, who are part of a media class, were hit with a five-day suspension because the video violates the school's strict sexual harassment policy which outlaws "verbal, visual, or physical conduct of a sexual nature made by someone from or in the educational setting."
Save the twerking for the prom, kids. Speaking of the prom, the seniors involved in Twerkgate may not be allowed to attend it or graduation as a result of their wanton desire to do it with no hands. It seems like an unfair punishment, but the students won't let it get them down.
One student reportedly tweeted: "Suspended for twerking. What do I do? Twerk. At the beach. I twerk at the beach." They've also gained a devoted band of supporters who have created the "#freethetwerkteam" hashtag in their honor.
Parents agree that the students shouldn't have been suspended. Instead, the video should be used as a lesson about how seemingly good ideas can come back to haunt you. We'd simply remind them to twerk responsibly, i.e. not on school grounds or with school equipment.
