In Indian River County, FL, an 18-year-old high school senior has been charged with two felonies for participating in a sexual relationship with another female student. Kaitlyn Hunt reportedly met the 14-year-old girl at the beginning of the school year, around the time of her 18th birthday. Their relationship became sexual, and she was arrested in February and charged with two counts of sexual battery on someone between 12 and 16-years-old.
It's true that Hunt violated Florida's age-of-consent law, but her mother thinks the case has more to do with her girlfriend's parents being upset about the discovery of their daughter's sexuality. Her father says that Sebastian River High School is going to lengths to appease the younger girl's parents, removing Hunt from the basketball team and then expelling her.
Hunt faces an uncomfortable decision. On one hand, she can take a plea deal which would force her to spend two years on house arrest and possibly be added to the sex offender registry. On the other, the case can go to trial. In the meantime, her parents have started a petition to convince Assistant State Attorney Brian Workman to call off the prosecution.
