Today in not-surprising-at-all TV news: The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that BBC has officially renewed long-running sci-fi series Doctor Who for an eighth season. The news was pretty much a given considering its massive fanbase not only in Europe, but in the U.S. and the rest of the world as well - Steven Spielberg even said that "the world would be a poorer place without Doctor Who," so yeah, renewal was a given.

The actor currently holding the coveted role as the Doctor, English actor Matt Smith, has reportedly signed on for the whole of season eight as well. He's held the role since 2010, when he replaced Scottish actor David Tennant.

The news was announced ahead of the show's 50th anniversary special, which is set to air on November 23rd and feature former stars Tennant and Billie Piper in addition to current cast members Smith and Jenna Louise-Coleman
