Subway riding in New York City reached its highest number since the 1940s last year. MTA reports over 1.65 billion passengers in 2012, the most since there were over 2 billion in 1946. These recent statistics also show a 1 percent increase over 2011, despite being shut down for five days last fall because of Hurricane Sandy.
The G train boasted the most passengers, averaging over 2,000 on weekdays due to the continuing development of Brooklyn. MTA officials also noted frequent travel from Queens to Brooklyn as a result of the Barclays Center opening.
