Rutgers University is up to its neck in shit following the Mike Rice fiasco, so the last thing they need is more bad publicity. Unfortunately, college kids will be college kids. On Saturday, a number of people were arrested in New Brunswick, NJ after Rutgers students joined forces with other fun-seekers for the non-stop party known as "Delafest."
If the name doesn't ring a bell, it's because it's the kinder, gentler version of Rutgersfest, which was brought to an abrupt end in 2011 following shootings. No bullets were fired over the weekend, but undergrads eager to celebrate warm weather and the end of the semester will always find ways to disturb the peace and ignite the ire of law enforcement. It's what they do.
Riot police were summonsed to diffuse the situation, and youthful rebellion led to a mist of pepper spray courtesy of police officers. Gina Pagliaro, a sophomore, best described the incident as "seven parties that got out of control." It's college; it happens.
What should never happen, however, is lighting couches on fire for no good reason.
