Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep are apparently in final talks to join Disney's big-screen adaptation of Into the Woods. Deadline confirms that they "almost have their deals wrapped up for the film."

The 1987 Stephen Sondheim musical is about a baker and his wife who venture into the woods to find the witch who has cursed them and left them unable to have children. They encounter classic fairy tale characters on their journey. Streep will play the witch.

Both have starred in musicals before: Depp starred in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, another Sondheim musical. Streep played the lead in the ABBA musical Mamma Mia!

A table read in New York last October included Megan Hilty (Smash), Christina Baranski (Chicago), Allison Janney (Hairspray) and "quite a few other Broadway stars."

Streep's next film is also a Broadway show—August: Osage County, opposite Julia Roberts.
