So much for denial.

Facebook is widely expected to announce its mobile phone today.

The device, which HTC helped create, will revolve around a little blue f, as Read Write puts it, and "run on a modified but not fully skinned version of Android."

It took a long time for the phone to get here, says Read Write, as Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg denied the phone was being built several times. "First of all, we're not a hardware company. Second of all, our goal is not to sell anything physical; our goal is to make it so that everything can be social," he said on November 30, 2010. "People keep on asking if we're going to build a phone," he insisted again earlier this year. "We're not going to build a phone."

But now after HTML 5 and iPad fumbles, it looks like the company is finally doubling down on mobile content. How come? It would take a lot of convincing to get people to pick up the phone, and even then whatever revenues it drummed up would "barely be a drop in Facebook's ever-growing bucket," says Read Write.

Here's hoping we learn the answer to Zuckerberg's riddle today.
