D.C. has something else to brag about. According to the American Association of University Women, D.C. has the smallest wage gap between genders in the country. Though it still isn't even, women in D.C. earned 90 cents for every dollar men made in 2011. That's significantly higher than the average across the country, which is 77 cents on the dollar.
This was revealed yesterday as part of Equal Pay Day, which DCist describes as "the day when an average female employee who started working on January 1, 2012 finished earning what an average male worker made in 2012." Apparently, it took a few extra days.
According to the Washington Post, D.C. managed to win this battle because of a reliance on the federal government, where pay scales are more cut and dry.
