Looks like the Girls writers' room isn't the only thing that's downsizing for season three - apparently, the cast is as well. According to the New York Post, star Christopher Abbott - who portrays Charlie, the lovable on-and-off again boyfriend to Marnie (Allison Williams) - has made an abrupt exit from the series just as production is beginning.

If you're familiar with the way that season two of Girls ended, this is shocking - though the Marnie/Charlie drama was getting pretty old, his character's arc was in no way finished, especially by the end of the finale.

The reasoning for the departure isn't totally clear. Officially, Abbott's rep released a statement to comment on the exit, which said that the actor is "grateful for the experience of collaborating with Lena, Judd [Apatow], and the entire ‘Girls’ cast and crew, but right now he’s working on numerous other projects and has decided not to return to the show." Unofficially, a source told the NY Post that Abbott was "at odds" with creator/star Dunham, and that "he didn’t like the direction things are going in, which seems a bit odd since the show put him on the map."

Yikes. We have to ask, though: Since Dunham tends to write what she knows, who else is hoping that we'll see this a thinly-veiled reference to this on the show?
