Where did this one come from? There was nothing in the months leading up to its release to suggest that How to Train Your Dragon would be anything more than another ho-hum installment in the CGI landscape of Hollywood. But when the movie hit theaters, it blew the doors down and became one of the sleeper animated hits of the year.
The movie revolves around a young Viking warrior in a fictitious land who has to slay a dragon to prove his worth as a warrior.
However, the boy has a sudden stroke of conscience, and chooses to befriend the the dragon rather than kill it. DreamWorks animation has done some great work in the past on the Shrek series, but, with time, this could prove to be the studio's real crowning achievement. The emotions are far deeper than most of its contemporaries, plus it also features the requisite laughs and stunning animation to accompany the pathos.
Unfortunately it was released the same year as Toy Story 3, which overshadowed it, along with many other movies. Still, that doesn't stop How to Train Your Dragon from standing tall as one of the best animated films of the past decade. And, indeed, all time. —JS
