The West Coast is trying to catch up, as an ambitious California State Senator is advocating legislature that would extend bar hours. The bill, known as SB 635, was proposed by Sen. Mark Leno from the Bay. Leno says that allowing bars to serve liquor until 4 a.m. would increase tax revenue, create jobs and be pretty damn good for tourism. He's right.
As expected, the bill has the full support of the California Restaurant Association, San Francisco Council of District Merchants, Golden Gate Restaurant Association and California Music and Culture Association. Though it would allow liquor sales past 2 a.m. at bars and nightclubs, it would have no impact on liquor or grocery stores.
SB 635 is expected to be heard at policy meetings this spring, and the people most likely to oppose it are law enforcement officials.
