The Federal Trade Commission has released a study today that shows that the video games industry has been the most effective at keeping mature video games out of the hands of kids. According to the study which took place between 2000 and 2012, 87% of undercover shoppers were unable to walk out of retailers with an M-Rated title. This beats out other forms of media including R-rated films, music and DVDs.

“The ESRB is the gold standard in entertainment ratings. The ESRB[Entertainment Software Rating Board] and its retail partners deserve thanks and praise for their outstanding work in empowering and helping parents,” said Michael D. Gallagher, president and CEO of the Entertainment Software Association. “This is the fourth report that has video game retailers performing the best in this important category. We have an unparalleled commitment to working with parents and retailers, and will continue to help ensure that this remarkable level of enforcement remains high.” The ESRB is the organization who determines the ratings of video games and works with retailers on enforcing the rules.

If you were wondering who ranked the best in keeping kids' consoles clean, the kudos go to Target with an 100% enforcement rate of 37 undercover shops.
