The March 2013 issue of Ebony is already on newsstands, but we couldn't pass up a chance to talk about the lovely Kerry Washington. She was all over the redcarpet during awards season and premiered a sexy new promo for her show Scandal during the Oscars last weekend.
In the issue, Washington said she loves playing Olivia Pope because of her complexity. "In her professional life, she is so powerful and is this self-made woman…But in her personal life, she is a mess and I kind of love that," she said. "I love that I get to embody all of that complexity because I also think it takes a certain level of progress for us to have a Black Woman that powerful be an emotional mess on television."
She played a very different character in Django Unchained, but Washington saw a connection between Broomhilda and Scandal's crisis management pro. “[Olivia] is the answer to Broomhilda’s prayers…I’m grateful that these two women on opposite ends of history, on opposite ends of their experience, both strong women but in such different ways, can exist at the same time.”
