In a shocking turn of events, George Zimmerman's attorneys have waived his right to an April 22 hearing about the state of Florida's controversial "Stand Your Ground" law. Zimmerman has been charged with second-degree murder for fatally shooting 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Sanford, FL last February. The 29-year-old insists that he shot Martin in self-defense.
This decision will allow the defense to possibly mix the hearing in with the trial, but more important, it gives them more time to prepare. In February, a motion to delay the trial was denied. Zimmerman's counsel has also asked to interview a young woman who is allegedly the last person to speak to Martin. That request has been denied as well.
Zimmerman's attorneys are investigating the young woman, the Orlando Sentinel reports. According to defense team lawyer Don West, the woman, known as "Witness 8," claims that she missed Martin's funeral because she was in the hospital. Prosecutors have confirmed that no medical records exist.
Zimmerman's trial is scheduled for June 10.
