If you're a student at the School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City (and involved in this on-campus trial run), you can buy textbooks, chips and drinks with your fingertips instead of cash or credit.

All a student has to do at the on-campus stores where the scanners are installed is swipe their fingerprints, type in their birth date and receive a purchase receipt by email. Hanscan Indentity Management, the company that has patented the technology, picked the 2,400-student campus of mechanical students and hard science majors to test the new devices.

The next step is to ensure privacy and minimize security concerns.
