According to the New York Post, some Manhattan clubs are slapping customers with illegal "operations charges."  EMM-operated clubs such as Finale and SL are under investigation for adding 3 to 5 percent charges for drinks and bottle service; messages are printed on the back of receipts explaining that the extra charges "offset a variety of ever-changing costs that affect our particular business."

The COO for Tae Group and an attorney representing EMM say that customers are made aware of the practice before they place orders. However, Abigail Lootens, spokeswoman for the Department of Consumer Affairs, says that surcharges are outlawed in New York even if they're listed.

The best way to address the issue is to call your credit card company or to steer clear of these places altogether. The latter is the safest bet.
