A Brief History of White People Rapping in Movies

Dan Aykroyd and Tom Hanks as Sgt. Joe Friday and Det. Pep Streebek in Dragnet (1987)

Song: "City of Crime"
Level Of Embarrassment: Medium

Most Americans would say that, "No, there isn't anything that Tom Hanks can't do." But have those people heard Tom Hanks rap over the end credits of Dragnet? Pysche! Tom Hanks is a fucking fantastic rapper! He brings extra-large personality to his bars on "City of Crime," shouting his raps like he just watched a Beastie Boys video once. Aykroyd plays it straight, almost like he's doing solemn spoken word. The combination makes for an experience that's more quaint than offensive. —RS
